Want to have a passive-learning experience, get new knowledge without spending long hours in front of the screen? Well, podcasts are your companion.

Youtube tutorials, Udemy courses, or reading articles are undoubtedly informative sources of learning. Still, there are also better platforms where you just put on your headphones and listen to some good informative podcasts.

In this article, you will find 7 of the enlightening podcasts for software developers about coding and other related topics to add to your 2021 resolutions list.

JavaScript Jabber

If you are planning to start programming in JavaScript, JSJ is one of the best JavaScript focused podcasts you will find. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner in the world of JS or advanced and figuring out the details of how to create that React component, JavaScript Jabber is definitely for you.

One of my favorite episodes is back from 2014 that I would personally recommend; yes, the podcast is that old; it is with Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript called “The Original of JavaScript with Brendan Eich”

APIs You Won’t Hate

Do you usually work with different APIs? Do you spend time designing an API? Do you want to use GraphQL or stay with REST? Although this podcast is relatively new, the first episode in June 2019, it still provides many valuable discussions on designing, implementing, and monitoring APIs.

If you enjoy the podcast, you might want to buy the book of the same title.

The New Stack Context

When it comes to platform design and scale, TNS Context has it all, cloud-native, microservices, system scaling, chaos monkey, Kubernetes, containers, monitoring…and the list goes on and on.

In each episode, TNS hosts and cloud experts go thoroughly into that specific episode’s topic.

Developer Tea

Learn about the tech community, how to solve tech problems, how to prepare for interviews, how to lead a software team, and many other topics that interest the software development community.

My recommended episode is a small bite 10-minute discussion on “Offensive and Defensive Software Engineering Strategies”.

Soft Skills Engineering

Without soft skills, a good coder cannot become a great engineer. Soft Skills engineering discusses various topics like growing your career, evaluations, and during Covid-19, many topics about working from home.

SSE is an entertaining and often funny podcast. It’s a good listen to have fun aside from the valuable topics.

Adventures in DevOps

Adventures in DevOps starts like a book, explaining DevOps and going deeper into all topics that interests DevOps engineers. It has everything from DevOps culture, Kubernetes, cloud-native, containers, all the way to infrastructure automation.

The Testing Show

If you are into QA specifically. You will find limited number of podcasts focusing entirely on Quality Assurance and its related topics. The Testing Show releases one episode every month with great topics on everything testing.

In The Testing Show, you will listen to topics like modernization of QA, testing DevOps code, chaos engineering, and performance testing.

One of my recommended episodes is “Building Great Testing Teams”.

Honorable Mentions

Although these aren’t specifically about software development, they are related to the field and are quite impressive.

Acquired

It started as a podcast and grew into a big community of entrepreneurs and tech geeks. Ben and David explore and unwrap tech companies’ acquiring, all the behind-the-scenes of how it happened and how their future changed. Did the new company absorb them? Or they did leave them to stand alone and the effects on the startup and its users.

Acquired has a vibrant community on Slack, where you can discuss previous episodes and dig even deeper into the details.

Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman

Reid is a LinkedIn co-founder. He knows a thing or two about scaling a platform to millions of users. In each episode, Reid hosts experts from different tech industry areas and discusses how to grow your company from scratch and reach millions of users. They discuss culture, technology, best practices, big data, software methodologies, and different business models.

Masters of Scale is an excellent podcast regardless if you are a coder, a CEO or a venture capitalist.
